Can using iodine supplements help you lose weight?
Using iodine supplements may help your metabolism if your thyroid isn't functioning properly
If your dietary habits are poor however, it wouldn't matter. Losing weight requires a complete change of lifestyle and taking just one supplement is not enough.
Losing weight and being healthy requires consistent effort until it becomes habitual. However adding iodine to a routine can give your metabolism the boosts it may need.

Almost all table salt contains added iodine. If you're on a salt restricted diet because of high blood pressure, or other reasons then adding some iodine to your diet would be beneficial.
Which supplement is best?
Many will only suggest a product to you. Don’t get me wrong if the product is good and the individual is sincere then great. However, most of the time this isn’t the case. Oral liquid iodine, liquid kelp, iodine tablets, etc... if you need iodine it is readily available.
Chances are you have enough iodine in your diet already, unless you have a malabsorption problem, or hypothyroidism.
My other article on iodine supplements talked about the thyroid gland, and why iodine is needed for it to function optimally. Iodine is needed in fetal development more than at any other time in life.
Iodine is needed for a healthy metabolism, but its other roles in the body remain unknown. It's has some antioxidant properties, and its used as an antiseptic for cuts, and scrapes. Many Doctors still don't know everything that iodine does in our bodies. What is known is it is absolutely essential.
Other elements affect iodine absorption. Minerals like calcium, zinc, and magnesium (If you want to know more read my other articles in both left and right hand columns). The body needs balance, and more importantly homeostasis. Homeostasis is the bodies Ph balance, ph means Potential Hydrogen. Ph balance should be 7.0 for perfect homeostasis. Less than 7 and you are too acidic, more than 7 to much alkalinity. The body needs balance, hence the reason for many organs and glands within the body to regulate the balance of minerals in the blood. So how do you stay balanced? Below are the most fundamental ways:
Correct diet, Deep Breathing, and Exercise
Eating the right foods ensures you get the sustenance you need. But this is a lengthy discussion we don’t have time for, but to keep it basic whole foods, like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fats, and protein. Eating fish will provide you with a good amount of fatty acids, and protein. Whole baked chicken can be seasoned with beneficial herbs, kelp, garlic, and added with loads of vegetables.
Whole food Iodine Supplements
Whole food supplements are the only supplements you should ever buy, or consume. The reason is simple. Bioavailability, and dosage. This is the difference between supplements, and super supplements. Whole food supplements are absorbed by the body more efficiently, and overdosing on food isn't likely, depending on the supplement. You can take too much kelp, and develop hyperthyroidism from consuming too much iodine.
Deep breathing is important it keeps the mind and body balanced. The benefits are profound. For more information on deep breathing techniques, sign up for my newsletter.
Exercise is the best form of detoxification cleaning out the body by heat, and sweat. A mixture of cardio, resistance training, and high intensity is the best form. This is why I love martial arts, because it is a complete system offering multiple exercises for mental and health benefits.
The only iodine supplements I recommend.
Kelp. Kelp is seaweed found throughout the worlds oceans. Kelp contains high amounts of iodine because most of the iodine on Earth is in the Earth’s oceans. This is because iodine is highly soluble, therefore most of it dissolved in the oceans, being absorbed by sea vegetation. This is why sea life is the best source for iodine, and why most coastal countries that have fish, and seaweed as staples hardly suffer from any form of iodine deficiency, not to mention cardiovascular diseases unlike many inland communities.
So if you are looking to lose weight do not think iodine supplements are your solution. Correct diet, exercise, and stress management are the keys to losing weight. However if you suffer from hypothyroidism, or an under-active thyroid than iodine supplements are necessary, and kelp is the best way to add it to your diet safe and naturally.
